Look Inside

Book 3
Chapter 1

1947

“Get out of my house.” Alice stared at the man she’d invited into her home, into her bed. “Get the hell out!”
“Alice, please, just listen to me,” Victor begged, taking a step toward her.
But she immediately backed away. There was nothing he could say to change her mind. He’d tricked her. He’d used her. All to get his hands on that stupid book.
He was the djinn who’d been using her aunt. Not to get into this world, but to find the book with the spell that would send him back.
Probably so he could destroy it.
His blue eyes glowed white with a dawning sense of horror. “No, Alice. You’re wrong. My Alice…please—”
“Don’t call me that,” she gritted out. “I am not yours. Not anymore.”
A wave of anguish struck her from across the room and darkened his expressive eyes. “Do not say that. Please, let me explain.”
His voice was annoyingly calm, as though he were speaking to a skittish child. But Alice was no child. She was a woman grown. And she had been duped long enough. “I won’t tell you again, Victor. Remove yourself from my home, or I will force you out.”
He made no move toward her, but neither did he make one to leave. Instead, he stood his ground with his arms opened wide in supplication, silently begging her to take it back, to hear what he had to say.
But she would not. There was nothing to talk about. Nothing to rethink. This male, this thing, was responsible for the death of her aunt. Alice had no doubt of that now. And she would not have him in her home or even in her vicinity for a moment longer. “I told you to leave.” A ball of fury rose within her, condensing in her core. Alice released it with a scream of rage, flinging it straight at Victor. It knocked him across the room and slammed him into the opposite wall. Her eyes went to the door beside him, and with a wave of her hand she opened it wide.
As he struggled to his feet, Alice stalked toward him. She could feel her magic rising to a dangerous level, but there was nothing she could do to stop it. She was running on pure emotion, not thinking, not caring what the consequences may be. “Get out!” Another wave of anger rose within her, travelling through her bloodstream to burst from her fingers. The force of it sent Victor flying out the open door to land on his backside in the mud.
Alice grabbed his hat and coat from the hanger by the door and followed him out onto the porch. “Get away from me and mine, you bastard, and do not come back! Or I will not be so easy on you next time.”
He got to his feet and came after her with a determined glint in his eye. The light fabric of his jacket glowed bright in the moonlight, but he ignored it, leaving his things in the puddle where they lay.
Alice retreated to the house and slammed the door in his face, quickly chanting a boundary spell around the entire property.
Victor’s footsteps disappeared from the porch, and Alice nodded to herself. The spell had taken hold. She would reinforce it with salt.
But instead of fetching it, Alice remained with her back pressed against the wooden door. Her chest rose and fell with rapid breaths as she looked around at the familiar rooms and furnishings that had been her home ever since she was a young girl.
Her mouth twisted with disgust. She barely even recognized it anymore. Signs of Victor’s—of the djinn’s—presence were everywhere. An extra teacup on the sink, her chair moved away from the fire. A book she had no interest in reading lying on the table beside it.
Her eyes narrowed and her teeth ground together until they hurt. Pushing away from the door, she set about gathering up his things and putting her house to rights. It didn’t take her long, and when she was finished, there was a pile on the floor of her living area of everything Victor had used or touched.
Alice stared at it, and as she did so her anger began to fade, replaced by heartache so sharp and severe it took her breath, and she had to sit before she ended up on the floor. She reached behind her blindly, found the couch, and sank down into the cushions. The tears began; falling so hard she thought they would never end.
But they did end, in time. And with a determined set to her jaw, Alice got to her feet and finished what she had started. She chanted, familiar words barely used, her voice rising and falling in cadence with the spell. She watched as the pile of Victor’s things burned away in a flash of cleansing blue fire. When every single piece of evidence of his existence had been reduced to nothing but a small pile of ash, she sat down on the couch and pulled her grandmothers quilt from the back, wrapping it around her shoulders as she stared into the fire.
Victor would be back. Of that she had no doubt. She knew little about the djinn, but she knew they were creatures of a different caliber than humans. She had seen the determined glint in his stormy, blue eyes. He would find a way past her border spell, and would be banging on her door, perhaps even barging in. He wouldn’t give up so easily.
She frowned at the tiny thrill that went through her at the thought.
Alice needed to tell the coven what happened. They needed to bond together. They would help her, if for no other reason than because she was the High Priestess.
Tomorrow, she would tell them. Tonight, she needed to herself. To mourn the loss of her love. For she was beginning to love Victor fiercely, in spite of his secrets, in spite of what he was.
But her love would never be enough to save them.

Bewitching Alice parts 1-3 is a prequel to The Deathless Night Series and goes back in time to tell some of the history of the Moss Witches. The story is about a headstrong witch and the forbidden love that destroys the coven, told from Alice's point of view.

1947, deep in the rain-soaked Cascade Mountains. Alice Moss is next in line to become High Priestess of her secluded witch coven—until mysterious, definitely-not-human Victor Palermo arrives with a warning.

Someone in Alice’s family is playing with dark magic. An ancient book holds the key. And the dangerous djinn connected to it isn’t interested in granting wishes.

He wants Alice.

Now Alice must protect her coven while resisting the seductive pull of forbidden magic, uncovering Victor’s secrets, and figuring out whether the man she’s falling for is her greatest protector…or another supernatural danger she should have run from.
